73 students speak another primary language at home (e.g. Chinese, Cantonese, Dutch, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Tamil, Urdu, Farsi, Hebrew, Russian, etc.).
30+ students will use English as a Second Language services this year (and this group is growing).
Diverse population: 26 African descent, 11 Hispanic/Latin, 105 Asian/Pacific Descent, 336 White
27 students live in Boston
60 students (13%) identified as having Special Needs (6-7 in process), but many receiving support of other kinds (e.g. Title 1 math, reading, behavioral)
Diverse family structures: mother-father, extended family, adopted, bi-racial, lesbian parents, shared custody, single parent
Currently four sections of kindergarten and grades 1, 3-5 and three sections of second grade = 23 classrooms
Estabrook hosts a district-wide CARE program for students with behavioral or emotional challenges in Grades K-5.
Class sizes from 16 (Kindergarten) to 25 (grade 5)
71 staff members, Full and Part time (excluding those who come only for a couple of hours a week). 35 hired in last 5 years.
12 new staff members hired this year (3 classroom teachers, Art teacher, English Language Learner tutor, 2 CARE Special Class Assistants, Title 1 Math, Special Education Evaluation Team Leader, Metco Aide, tutors). 10 new staff hired last year.

Challenges, Impact, & Responses

Better budget picture than last year, but still stretched.	Budget support due to passage of override means: Art, music, gym back to 60 minutes a week! Curriculum specialists here to support teachers! New Scott Foresman Reading program! 1/2 time Assistant Principal! Etc. Do not have budget for: furniture, building, school goals, discretionary for needs that arise, limited instructional assistants & materials, fees to use building, etc. PTA helps a great deal!
Very diverse academic needs in each grade. Achievement Gap parallels country, state and district for economically disadvantaged, African American, & special needs students.	Scott Foresman reading provides much support for differentiation: high achieving, average, struggling, English Language Learners. Math Differentiation Binder for every grade Title 1 Math/Reading Services for lowest performing students K-2 Curriculum-based math assessments given in reading & math once a year. "Double dosing" in literacy & math (1^st-2^nd only) for lowest achieving students Look for parent-supported after school programs: Peacemakers, Destination Imagination, Chess Club, etc.
