Civil War Web Activities:

Introduction:

In the following activities you will find web sites that will take you back in time to the American Civil War Period 1850 - 1865. A time when the states in America were fighting about whether each State could have the right to allow slavery. Read all the activities and then you and a partner choose two you would like to do. Save all your work in a folder to share with classmates and hand in to your teacher.

Map Activity

By 1861 the United States was divided into Northern States and Southern States.The Northern States thought the people should not own slaves and the Southern States thought the people could own slaves. Look at the map of a nation divided and write down any three southern states and any three northern states. Print out the map and circle the states you wrote down and put a marking on all the states that did not allow their citizens to own slaves.

Timeline Activity

Abraham Lincoln was President of the United States during the Civil War. Write down these key dates of President Lincoln's life : 1809, 1836, 1861, 1863, 1865. This is a treasure hunt: read this web site to learn what happened to President Lincoln on those dates and write it next to the dates. Go to the timeline program and create a timeline for President Lincoln.

Underground Railroad Activity

Many slaves were able to escape to freedom by following the underground railway. Go to this site and click on both choices ... follow Harriet Tubman or not ... to get an idea of the journey. When you have completed your journey write down in one or two sentences how you felt.
